I don't see Apple ever putting an "App Store" in place for the Mac. It seems the reasons the SDK for iPhone OS is more restrictive than what is available for Mac OS X lies with Apple wanting to maintain a level of ease of use and reliability for the mobile devices. I don't think that they worry about it for the Mac.

Mac users tend to keep developers in check on the Mac by demanding quality from them. If they don't find quality in the product, they move on. This does not affect Apple on the Mac like it does the Mac developer.

As you say, if Mac market share were to go up, the possibility may be there, but I still doubt we would ever see the "App Store" for Mac OS X.

You can back up certain pieces of data by means such as uploading to your iDisk or redownloading apps from the App Store, but any data created by various applications you download and install on to your iPhone (or iPad) will only be backed up by syncing with iTunes.

As a simple example, if you downloaded an app that let you make grocery lists, then unless that app had its own syncing/backup functionality built in to it, the only time you could back up the lists you've made is when you sync with your machine.

Is this first section correct? The iPhone can be updated via the app store, by downloading from iDisk things that have been uploaded from my computer, or backing up data from the iphone to idisk - I can buy songs and apps directly from the phone, will the iPad be different?
