iPhoto Library Manager and iPhoto ‘08

Apple announced the release of a new version of iLife today, which includes an updated version of iPhoto. I don’t have any super-secret contacts inside Apple (yet!) that feed me advanced copies of iPhoto, so I don’t yet know what the compatibility status of iPhoto Library Manager is with the new iPhoto. In the past, the basic function of creating and switching between libraries in iPhoto Library Manager has been unaffected by updates, but the more advanced features such as copying photos and merging libraries has required an update, and I’m guessing that will probably be the case once again.

So, I’ll be getting my hands on a copy of iPhoto ‘08 as soon as I can, and I’ll have more information on what works and what doesn’t once I get a chance to play around with it some. For now, proceed with caution if you’re upgrading to the new iPhoto and use iPhoto Library Manager heavily, and I’ll be posting whatever info I find as soon as I find it.

Update: 8/9/07 The FedEx guy arrived today with my new copy of iLife ‘08! As I suspected, it appears you can still create and switch between libraries using iPhoto Library Manager with no problems. Also as I suspected, the following features of iPLM don’t work with iPhoto 7:

If you try to use any of these features, you’ll probably get a lovely looking error message along the lines of “*** -[NSCFDictionary setObject:forKey:]: attempt to insert nil key”. Nothing bad will happen if you try to copy stuff between libraries, it just won’t work. So, I’ll be working on getting these features back up and running, I’ll have more of an idea of a timeframe once I get more of a chance to delve into the details.

You’ll probably also notice that the album list might look a little odd after you work with iPhoto 7 a little bit, as there are some new album types that are displayed in iPLM with a regular album icon. Also, the roll list will not display roll names properly. This is all due to the new “Events” feature in iPhoto 7, which is basically a rebranding of rolls that actually makes them a useful and integral part of the iPhoto experience (you can read more about events/rolls and some other iPhoto 7 changes here).

Also, anyone who encounters specific issues with iPhoto ‘08, please e-mail support@fatcatsoftware.com with your issue, as that will be the best way for me to keep track of them and give a response.

Hey thanks for the quick update about iPhoto ‘08! I thought I’d check to see, but wouldn’t have been surprised to not find anything posted about it yet. I appreciate the quick post!

FYI, I’ll be picking up iPhoto ‘08 in about an hour. I can send you a quick email about how it works with iPhoto Library Manager after I play around with it for a bit, if you like.

    Just tried this,

Im experiancing a error since upgrading to ilife 08.

Comp is fine but if i open up imovie or iphoto or iweb and select the media browser i get …. “Connection Failed The server may not exist or is not operational at this time. Check the server name or IP address and try again.”

    Console logs shows :

    2007-08-08 15:20:28.733 afp_mount[278] CFLog (99): CFMessagePortCreateLocal(): failed to name Mach port (com.apple.afp_mount.ServiceProvider)

However this is not logged every time the error occurs?

    ideas?

Today I bought iLife08. But I am waiting for hints / alerts concerining compatablilty of IPhoto08 and it’s libraires as managed by iPhoto Library Manager before I install iLife et al. I am now using ILM Version 3.2.6.

I have multiple iPhoto libraries and expect to contuine using IPhoto Library Manager to manage and facilitate using them with iMovie08 etc08. I can hardly wait to get started using IPhoto08 and am anxoiusly looking forward to news about iPhoto Library Manager and possible updates.

Thanks for working on this. I will not switch to iPhoto’08 if iPhoto Manager is not going to work with. Plus I love my Flickr, Facebook and Picasse exporters..

You’ll also get the “*** -[NSCFDictionary setObject:forKey:]: attempt to insert nil key” error if you try to rebuild an 08 library with iVMP.

I can confirm that events are rebranded rolls. The helpfile states:

When you upgrade to iPhoto ’08, iPhoto converts all your film rolls into Events. At import, photos can be grouped into one Event or several, depending on your preference.

I have always used rolls as events. I hope the upgrade will work with swedish umlauts.

Hmm . . I upgraded one of my iPhoto libraries first . . then found I couldn’t add it to iPhoto Library Manager after that as iPhoto now saves libraries as packages.

  9. Brian Webster on August 13th, 2007 1:27 pm

Hayden: Indeed, using the “Add Library” button doesn’t work to add a package library, but you can still drag it from the Finder into the library list to add it.

How do I browse to a file to open in photoshop? Now that I have upgraded to iPhoto 08 my images appear as a package in the finder.

Just an idea for you. A nice tool that would be appreciated by all iPhoto users, would be the addition of a resize image option to down size files that we really don’t need all the data we have captured. A batch editor with this feature would be nice.

I’ve been getting the same error as Eddy, August 8th, since I started using iPhoto Library Manager. Specifically, my Desktop & Screen Saver slide show has become corrupted. It used to point to my “Pictures” folder and now when I select that it often but not always shows:

“Connection Failed The server may not exist or is not operational at this time. Check the server name or IP address and try again.”

This happened before I upgraded to iLife 08, specifically after I chose a photo for my desktop from within iPhoto 7.

Greg: Mac OS X Hints posted a new hint today with a way to let you access photos inside the iPhoto library package. You can find the hint at http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20070813153307986

Fritz: in an e-mail exchange with Eddy, he said he tracked it down to having an alias in his Movies folder that pointed to an item on a network drive. You might look through your Movies, Pictures, and perhaps Music folders to see if you have any such aliases. Feel free to shoot me an e-mail if you continue to have problems.

  14. Tod on August 17th, 2007 6:39 pm

@Greg: you can view the contents of most (if not all) files that are in the “package” format by right (or control) clicking the file icon. This will bring up a contextual menu one of whose options is to view the contents. Select that and a new finder window opens and you can browse around as you see fit. If you feel like adding, changing, or deleting anything within the package, be sure you have a backup copy first. You never know how those actions will affect the controlling application.

  15. Tod on August 17th, 2007 6:48 pm

Brian, I just found your application by searching Version Tracker. Even though I’ve already upgraded to iPhoto 08, I’m buying the paid version in anticipation of a future update that will work with iP08.

    Thanks for your great work!

    Brian-

Could you develope a program that highlights text within a blog or a news site as we read. AND be able to save it that way?

It would be extremely helpful AND extremely popular.

Do you know if such a program already exists?

  17. artist on August 17th, 2007 10:28 pm

Brian - I sent another post 2 times and it didn’t show up!?? FYI.

One of the interesting things that iPhoto 08 seems to have broken is the ability to use the iPhoto on a network (USB AirportExtreme -n) disk such that two or more machines can use the same library at the same time. Worked in in iPhoto 06. And works fine in iPhoto 08 if you create a new library and populate it with new pics. But I have been unable to do this with my main library that iPhoto 08 updated for me. S0 - I’m waiting with baited breath for your update so that I can copy my one library with a zillion albums into a new one.

    Thanks, Tuck

I’m using IPhoto Manager with ILife 08, if I create the library first and then import the pics (which I’ve always done anyways) everything works the same as before.

I am begining to feel really nervous about my i-photo/i-photo library manager situation. I just realized I must not have upgraded since I got it (vsn 2.0). Love it, and felt okay about my rolls becoming events etc. But…
a)I am really only safely able to access a library through library manager. Double clicking on any one of them opens whichever one is checked in manager.
b)Very glad to have the hint about alias’s and the original/modified folder in each library folder.I need that kind of access to back up etc.
c)I thought I had solved most of my problem (related to using i-movie and accessing photo images…it wants the media in the pictures folder)… at least I have a work-around that is pretty good for me.
d)One of my clean-up procedures was to very carefully delete extraneous copies of i-photo library, and be sure there was one in the picture folder. But…nervously…
e)I had a library for i-movies only. I don’t think I have lost any; they seem to be in other places on my computer. But the library is no longer accessible and I deleted it from most places where it existed. However, today I discovered when I searched for “library6 iphoto” I have one in every one of my ‘other’ library folders..
I think I should just delete them all, but it is such a mystery to me as to how they got there, I am hesitant to do so.
And yes I would like to upgrade; just nervous about my very large photo file right now.
    Thanks..
    Marilyn
